Tissue Engineering of the Right Heart Outflow Tract by a Biofunctionalized Bioresorbable Polymeric Valved Tube

The TEH-TUBE Innovation

The TEH-TUBE project seeks to provide a novel biomaterial for use in the treatment of congenital heart abnormalities in children and young adults which will grow along with the patient. This ambitious project is based on the concept of Tissue Engineering and on the chemistry of biodegradable polymers.

This project provides an innovative solution concept from at least three perspectives:

  1. The use of a fully resorbable material which should lead, ultimately, to the complete reconstruction of the RVOT by an autologous living and growing tissue;
  2. The development of a composite prosthesis whose two components (the tube and the valve) will be made of polymers featuring specific mechanical properties and resorbability rates to ensure an optimal time-controlled re-colonisation of the implant;
  3. The parallel assessment of two potential options for harnessing endogenous repair mechanisms through the recruitment of host-associated cells:
    1. The seeding of the prosthesis with autologous stem cells acting as sensors, or;
    2. Its grafting with biomimetic peptidic sequences achieving a similar function.
